Cellular and Molecular Engineering

Quantitative techniques have been essential in assigning the human genome and in defining fundamental properties of proteins and sub-cellular structures. UCSF has a long tradition of excellence in this field but seeks to further expand its efforts in terms of the application of computational, modeling and engineering techniques. Areas of particular interest include:

  • Understanding how the molecular machinery in cells functions at the atomic level for analysis of cellular organelles, molecular motors, biological membranes and individual proteins.
  • Developing the techniques of genomics and proteinomics for analyzing whole genome complements of proteins and transcripts.
  • Theoretical modeling of protein structures, protein function and interacting systems of molecules that include signaling networks, molecular machines and membrane proteins.
  • Designing molecules with specific biological or functional properties for understanding drug transport and developing novel approaches to drug delivery.
