Musculoskeletal Research Group
My research in MR imaging includes specialization in sequence development, chemical shift selective and high resolution imaging. In the Musculoskeletal Research group, we work on developing high resolution and diffusion weighted echo planar imaging sequences for bone, intervertebral discs and cartilage. In addition to pioneering the development of MR data acquisition techniques, we have taken a leading role in the quantitative analysis of these data with particular attention to texture classification and morphometric analysis. Applications of this technology are used in part to assess patients with osteoporosis, arthritis and lower back pain. The overall goal is to extend imaging methods to provide information as to the biomechanical function of the musculoskeletal system; to this end we have combined the use of image-derived parameters with mathematical finite element models.
